Pets at the Crossroads of Domestic Abuse

In recent years, Canada has witnessed an unsettling rise in intimate partner violence. 2021 marked the seventh consecutive year of such an increase, with women disproportionately affected compared to men.

An often-overlooked aspect of this crisis is the heart-rending plight of pets in abusive households. The profound bond between survivors and their pets often influences the critical decision of whether to leave or stay in dangerous environments.

Recognizing the gravity of this issue and inspired by the monumental efforts of YW Calgary, we've decided to step forward and lend our support.

Domestic Abuse Statistics

CANADA (source)

  • In 2021, police reported 114,132 victims of intimate partner violence aged 12 years and older, which equates to 344 victims per 100,000 population.
  • Seventh (7th) consecutive year of a gradual increase in this type of violence.
  • 79% of the victims were women and girls.
  • The rate of victimization was nearly 4x higher for women and girls than men and boys.

ALBERTA

  • Urban Alberta's rate of police-reported intimate partner violence against women: 535 incidents per 100,000 population.
  • 16% above the national average.
  • 74% of Albertans know at least one woman who has experienced sexual or physical assault.

CALGARY (source, source)

  • Calgary Police Service responds to approx. 20,000 domestic violence calls yearly (City of Calgary, November 2022).
  • 2022 had 4,723 reported violent crime incidents categorized as domestic-related (Calgary Police Services, 2023).
    • Breakdown: 4 homicides, 437 sexual offenses, 3,671 assaults.
  • Average month of 2022: Over 1,600 domestic violence-related calls (City of Calgary, 2022).

The Often Overlooked Challenge

In the shadows of domestic abuse, pets become the silent, often overlooked victims. Just like children who might not grasp the entirety of their circumstances, pets share in the distress.

Yet, when survivors decide to break free, the fate of these faithful companions looms large. The majority of shelters are not equipped to cater to pets, presenting survivors with a heart-wrenching dilemma: pursue safety at the risk of leaving beloved pets behind or stay in harm's way to ensure their well-being. This predicament amplifies the challenge faced by those seeking refuge.

YW Calgary’s Solution

YW Calgary stands at the forefront of addressing the complex challenges faced by survivors of domestic abuse. Their mission extends beyond immediate refuge, acknowledging the crucial role pets play in the well-being of survivors. By forging alliances with entities like the Calgary Humane Society, YW Calgary has crafted an environment where no member of the family, be it human or pet, is left behind.

At the recently opened YW Crisis Shelter, YW Calgary has initiated a unique and much-needed approach. Understanding the bond between survivors and their pets, they've created a pet-friendly facility. This allows survivors to bring their pets with them, ensuring they don't have to choose between their safety and leaving a beloved pet behind.

By collaborating with the Calgary Humane Society, they ensure these pets receive proper care, both emotionally and physically. This holistic approach not only aids in immediate safety but also in the long-term healing process for both survivors and their pets.

Support a PAWSitive Cause This Holiday Season

YW Calgary provides a safe space for women escaping domestic abuse situations, while ensuring no pet is left behind. Their current need for their pet program is providing transportation to the Humane Society for women with pets for veterinary care, which can often mean expensive taxi rides.

Our goal is to raise $1000 by December 15, 2023, to help cover these transportation expenses. We are asking for your help.

By donating directly through our link, you'll be supporting this crucial initiative, and we promise to keep you informed about our progress.

By choosing to give, you help ensure every pet receives the medical treatment they deserve.

Join us in embracing the spirit of giving and making a genuine difference.
