Starting Daycare with Your Newly Adopted Rescue Dog: A PAWS Guide
Daycare readiness, a familiar routine, and optional grooming support for newly adopted rescue dogs in Calgary. Advice from PAWS owner Eric Yeung.

Welcoming a rescue dog into your home means getting to know an individual. You may know very little about their previous life. They may also have a lot to learn about walking on a leash, being around other dogs, and accepting everyday handling.
At PAWS, families often come to us because their newly adopted dog has limited social experience or struggles on walks. If you're considering daycare, our starting point is to assess the dog in front of us and work out whether group care is suitable. From there, repeat visits can help establish a familiar routine. If your dog also needs help getting comfortable with grooming, our rescued-dog grooming program is available as an optional, separately priced addition to their care plan.
Understand the behavior without assuming the history
When a dog with an unknown history is shy, fearful, or reactive, it's easy to assume they must have been abused. Those behaviors alone do not tell us what happened. Dogs with limited socialization and experience can show similar reactions.
That doesn't mean dismissing a dog's fears or overlooking a history you do know. It means being careful about the story we attach to their behavior. Tell us what you know, what you've observed, and what you're unsure about. We can work from there.
When I talk about leadership, I mean clear direction and consistency, especially on walks. A dog learning a new routine needs guidance they can understand and handlers who are consistent about what happens next.
Check health and recovery before starting
Some newly adopted dogs have recently been vaccinated, spayed, or neutered. Give your dog the recovery time they need, and follow your veterinarian's advice about readiness for activity and grooming.
Let PAWS know about recent treatment, vaccinations, or health concerns when you contact us. Starting a new routine shouldn't mean rushing your dog's recovery.
Start with the right assessment
For eligible new Calgary-area dogs comfortable in group play, the regular Intro Day process is a good starting point. Staff must confirm the request; submitting it does not confirm a reservation or establish that daycare is suitable. No package purchase is required for the free Intro Day.
The Intro Day helps us understand your dog's socialization level, how they respond to the group, and whether there are safety concerns. Our team observes your dog during the day and talks with you about what we see.
If your dog is fearful, reactive, or has a bite history, call or email us before requesting a date. Dogs with behavioral concerns start with an initial assessment call. Group daycare is not the right starting point for every dog, and we would rather discuss an appropriate plan with you first.
Our What to Expect guide explains the first-day routine, what to bring, and arrival and pickup. We recommend first-day pickup between 3 and 4 pm so there is time to review the day together. That feedback may be that your dog is ready to return, needs a slower start, or would benefit from a different approach for now.
Use repeat visits to build a familiar routine
If daycare is a suitable fit, the Intro 5 Visits pass can help your family and dog establish a routine. Familiarity gives us more opportunities to observe your dog and discuss how they are settling in.
The pass is $249 + GST and must be used within its normal 30-day usage window. See the daycare rates and terms. That usage window is separate from the grooming program's ideal timing after adoption.
Our focus is on what works for your dog, rather than expecting every rescue to adjust on the same schedule. Consistency matters, and the next steps depend on what the assessment and subsequent visits show us.
Optional add-on: the rescued-dog grooming program
Grooming is available alongside your daycare plans if your dog needs it. You can arrange the rescued-dog grooming program separately with PAWS; it isn't a requirement for starting daycare and isn't included in the Intro 5 Visits pass.
A dog doesn't have to be a puppy to need an introduction to grooming. An adult rescue may never have experienced a grooming table, a bath, or a blow dryer.
We use the same gradual handling approach as our puppy program, adapted for the individual dog. An older dog may be bigger and stronger, and their reactions to unfamiliar equipment or handling may be more intense. They may need more time with a step before moving on.
The Rescued Dog Grooming Program is a six-week program starting at $450 + GST. Full grooming sessions in weeks 5–6 are included in the program fee. Daycare is charged separately.
- Week 1: Assessment, discussion of pricing, and getting to know handling, the grooming table, and brushing.
- Weeks 2–4: Build familiarity and gradually introduce bathing, drying, and trimming at the dog's pace.
- Weeks 5–6: Full grooming sessions tailored to the dog's comfort level.
Sessions are on Mondays, ideally consecutively. If your dog needs more time, the program can extend to eight weeks at no extra charge.
Ideally, start within 30 days of adoption. If your dog needs recovery time or you have already passed that window, contact us to assess an appropriate starting plan. Passing day 30 does not automatically mean your dog needs the reactive grooming program.
Know what to expect from pricing and changes
Call or email PAWS to arrange a meet-and-greet. The grooming assessment takes place during the first grooming appointment, when we discuss pricing with you. Payment is due in full at that appointment.
If significant safety concerns or other exceptional circumstances arise, we will discuss any proposed changes and agree on the next steps with you before proceeding. That could mean changing the care plan or price; it is a conversation with the family.
Missed sessions, illness, pauses, needs beyond eight weeks, and any unused prepaid amount are handled case by case. We aim to arrange a consistent schedule, and ask families to contact us if something changes. The program page carries the existing cancellation terms.
Talk to us about your dog
You don't need to have every answer about your dog's past. Tell us what you know and what you're seeing now. We can help you work out an appropriate starting point for daycare, grooming, or a discussion about other support.
For a dog comfortable in group play, start with the Intro questionnaire and tell us you've recently adopted. For grooming, behavioral concerns, or uncertainty about readiness, call (403) 984-9247 or email info@pawsdogdaycare.ca.
